BocaNewsNow.com reports that there will be an Elmo birthday celebration at the Learning Express in Boca Raton, Florida.   There will be face painting, and other fun activities for the children.   This happens on Saturday

Sesame Place will be celebrating Elmo’s birthday both Saturday and Sunday.  Sesame Place is located in Langhorne, PA and has year round fun with the Sesame Street characters.  For each birthday that  the Muppets have, Sesame Place takes time to celebrate.

Sesame Street has previously launched several other eBooks that available through apps on iPhone, iPad, and iPod.  These eBook have been interactive and included audio.  Some have allowed readers that allowed readers to read along at their own pace, others have included animations that have allowed to the book to come alive as the children read.

In the new age of technology fueled lives e-books will probably become more of the rule than the exception.   Hopefully the interactivity of the books will bring about more of the interest in reading that carry through from preschool years through adulthood.   Because we all know that reading will open children to a wealth of knowledge.

The contest is being conducted by WIVB-TV in Buffalo.  Sponsors of the contest are Sesame Street Live, Applebee’s, and Shea’s perform Arts Center.   To enter you go to a participating Applebee’s restaurant in the area and have your child take a picture next to a cut-out of Elmo.  You then upload the picture to the http://www.wivb.com/dpp/community/contests/contest-find-elmo-2012.  Random winners will be selected from the eligible entries. USAID funds have been used for educational programs in many different nations.  Afghanistan, with the help of USAID, recently started airing their version of Sesame Street.  Each international Sesame Street program tries to meet the needs of the local children and add elements of culture from the nation.

Not only do the topics that Sesame Street cover concern deployment, but they also talk about the changes to the family as moms and dads come home from being deployed. Sesame Street Muppets are shown to experience some of the same changes that children must face. Elmo, with the help of his Sesame Street friends, has to adjust once his dad has to go away and serve in the military. Rosita must also deal with change that happens when her fathered is injured and must now use a wheelchair. These resources for children will continue to be available.

After several decades the Muppets have continued to entertain and draw a large audience. Critics have also seen the merit of the Muppets in present day. “The Muppets” has garnered 4 Critics’ Choice Award Nominations: 3 for the Best song for the “Life’s a Happy Song,” “Man or Muppet,” and “Pictures in My Head,” the fourth for Best Comedy. In a movie about Muppets and men it would seem fitting that the Muppets would join in on the singing on some of the soundtrack songs of the movie. Kermit, Walter, and the other Muppets join in singing on these nominated songs.
